A couple of years ago, Israeli automotive industries in Nazareth, developed an armoured car, AIL M462 Rhino, based upon the AIL Abir M462 all terrain 4X4 light truck. The ballistic protection is good enough to withstand the standard 7.62mm and 5.56mm infantry rifle ammo and hand-grenade splitters, the anti-mine protection of the armoured floor is similar to that of military patrol version of the Abir truck. The vehicle has a fully enclosed armoured body and it's weight is about 6 tons. There are armoured doors on either side just behind the cab and another door in the rear. There are three firing ports on either side of the passenger compartment and one in the rear door. On the front of the passenger compartment to the right is a roof hatch with a machinegun mount. The crew is 3 + 8 armed infantry soldiers or armed policemen.
The vehicle has been produced in the police version, without externally mounted weapon. This version has been bought by the Israeli Police forces in mid 1990s. The AIL Rhino military version armed with the 7.62mm MAG has been exported to Central and South America, Southeast Asia and Africa in the late 1990s.
There also exists a military version of this armoured car, armed with the 7.62 MAG mounted above the roof hutch. As far as known, the Israeli Defense Forces have not acquired that version of the vehicle, but it has been exported to security forces/military in some Central American / South American countries and Southeast Asia.
