81mm Mortar

As with the 60 mm versions, the intention with the 81 mm Mortars made by Soltam Systems is to provide variations in design to suit customer requirements.
The Mortars are of a conventional pattern, based on the original Finnish Tampella designs and using as many common items as possible. Vehicle's mounting kits suitable for installation in M113 (M113 Mortar vehicle) and similar APCs. are available.

The barrel comprises of tube made from high quality alloyed steel screwed to the breech piece, which fits into a socket in the baseplate. The breech piece carries a fixed firing pin withrawable by a safety lever. The split-barrel Mortar is intended for greater mobility when being carried on foot or in light vehicles, though the penalty for the reduced bulk is a small increase in weight because of the screw collar in the middle of the barrel.

The bipod is of orthodox pattern with spread legs. The distance between the legs is controlled by an adjustable chain. Passing up through the bipod are the traversing, elevating and cross leveling gears.

Two recoil cylinders are interposed between the barrel collar and the aiming gears to isolate the firing shocks and vibration. The aiming gears are sealed and protected against corrosion. The traversing handwheel is on the right and the sight mounting on the left.

The baseplate is circular with welded ribs on the underside. The socket takes the ball of the breechpiece and allows a full 360° traverse wihout need to move the baseplate. A carrying handle is attached, which is needed to extract the baseplate when coming out of action.

The sight incorporates a 360° (6,400 mils) traverse scale and a slipping scale. Thus when the zero line has been recorded, the slipping scale can be adjusted to zero. The Mortar can therefore engage targets, register at the conclusion of the action and re-engage without recourse to further ranging. Large switches are made easier by the incorporation of a quick-release lever, which enables the sight head to be rotated rapidly. Elevation and cross-level are controlled by bubbles and a collimator or, by special request, an elbow telescope, are used to lay on the aiming post. Reading accuracy is 1 artillery Mil. in elevation and azimuth.
